Our guests are Laramie Cummings and Tim Ashley from the Independence Center, a local nonprofit organization that provides traditional and self-directed home health care, independent living, and advocacy services for people with disabilities. The Independent Center’s mission is to work with people with disabilities, their families, and the community to create independence, so all may thrive.

Robin Wackernah is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Regis University of School of Pharmacy in Denver, Colorado. She has been a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist since 2012. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Roseman University of Health Sciences in Henderson, Nevada and completed an acute care residency at Keck Hospital at the University of Southern California (USC). The following year she completed a psychiatric pharmacy practice residency at the Los Angeles County Hospital at USC. She is a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacy, Colorado Pharmacist Society and the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists. Her areas of research interest include the efficiency of smoking cessation training and managing cognitive effects secondary to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Understanding the Implications of Chronic Pain

Margie Kaems is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the Project Manager of the Chambers Hope, Health, & Wellness Clinic, an integrated primary health care clinic embedded in an Aurora Mental Health Center.  She has experience in a variety of integrated primary healthcare settings as a behavioral health provider over the last five years, providing a wide range of services to clients of all ages, including treatment for chronic pain.  Currently in her clinic, she oversees integrated chronic pain programming and participates in the Colorado Project ECHO learning collaborative, which is a statewide collaborative focusing on improving chronic pain treatment from a multidisciplinary perspective.  Today, she will be talking about the connections between chronic pain and mental illness and how to use empowering interventions with clients.

The Joy and Challenges of a Child with Special Needs

Angela Wrather is the mom of Emily Wrather. Emily’s diagnosis was Hypoplastic left heart syndrome AV with canal defect, GERD, Severe acid reflux, and chronic UTIs from having horseshoe kidneys. She was non-verbal, had an eye condition, and was G-tube fed. Angela has dedicated her life to helping other parents with strategies that she learned while caring for Emily. She will share her thoughts on the medical system, family challenges both in the family unit and extended family, and her passion to become a resource.
